Sheriff candidate qualifications
SHERIFFS – Amends existing law to provide qualifications for sheriff candidates.

RS30312 / S1082

In Idaho there are no requirements to run for a county sheriff position other than the standard election requirements for other candidate. Given the high liability that comes with being an elected sheriff, the Idaho Sheriffs Association would like to see some basic requirements put in place in Idaho Code for those seeking this elected office. Such requirements are in place in many other states and are not roadblocks to seeking office but rather ensure quality candidates are seeking such office so that the county will avoid liability.

Idaho Code currently requires candidates:

• be 21 years of age

• be a U.S. Citizen

• reside in the county for the previous 12 months

This bill seeks to add needed minimum requirements in addition to the ones listed above. First, that an interested candidate has never been decertified by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Council. Secondly, this legislation excludes felons from seeking the office since a felony conviction is a disqualifier from allowing a person access to certain state and federal information systems.

There is no impact to the State's General Fund or costs associated with this bill.
