State board of education, election
ELECTIONS – Amends and adds to existing law to provide for State Board of Education member elections.

RS30602 / H0293

This legislation establishes that members of the State Board of Education be elected and outlines the procedure and qualifications for election. It also makes the elected Superintendent of Public Instruction the Chair of the State Board of Education as the only statewide elected member of the board. It also provides that petitions may be filed lieu of a filing fee.

This legislation provides an annual stipend of $12,000 per board member resulting in a fiscal impact to the General Fund of $84,000. The extra expenses for clerks to manage elections should be minimal. Some impact should be offset by receiving filing fees for candidates.
